PRESBYOND

PRESBYOND is a newer treatment method that can correct not only visual impairments but also presbyopia. One eye is corrected for distance vision but retains functionality for intermediate vision, while the other is adjusted for near vision, with minimal reduction in distance vision performance. This allows individuals with presbyopia to reduce their dependence on reading glasses. The treatment method serves as an alternative to refractive lens exchange, in which the eye's natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens.

Quite simple

Laser Eye Surgery with PRESBYOND in Four Steps

Your laser eye treatment at betterview is completed in four simple steps::

Four simple steps image
1

Preliminary examination

Open Icon

In a free and non-binding preliminary examination, we determine whether you and your eyes are suitable for treatment with PRESBYOND. In addition to checking your vision, your previous visual aids will also be analyzed. The preliminary examination takes 30 minutes.

2

Main examination

Open Icon

In a 45-minute main examination, your vision is confirmed once again, and additional tests are performed on your eyes. This ensures that the chosen treatment method will provide the best possible results for you. The main examination is also free of charge — costs only arise if you decide to proceed with the treatment.

3

Treatment

Open Icon

Before the treatment, your eyes are numbed with eye drops. The PRESBYOND procedure uses the Femto-LASIK laser method. A femtosecond laser creates a flap in the top layer of the cornea, which is then folded back. The excimer laser then corrects vision for both distance and near sight underneath. The flap is folded back into place and acts as a natural protective lens.

4

Follow-up

Open Icon

The first follow-up check after PRESBYOND takes place the next day. Typically, most of the full vision has already been restored by then, allowing you to resume your daily activities.

Timeline of Your PRESBYOND Treatment

We’ll guide you step by step through the timeline of your laser eye treatment, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. From the initial preliminary examination to the final follow-up check, you’ll find all the important information here to help you feel well-prepared and confident.

  • Before treatment

    Preliminary and primary examination

After the free and non-binding preliminary examination, you’ll return for the main examination. Please note that you should avoid wearing contact lenses for at least four days before your appointment. Additionally, eye drops will be administered during the tests, which may impair your vision for several hours — so you should not drive. We recommend using public transportation to travel to the main examination. During these tests, your vision, cornea, and the back of your eye will be thoroughly examined to determine the best treatment method for you.

  • Treatment day

    Treatment process and procedure

The third appointment is when the PRESBYOND treatment takes place. The process is similar to a traditional laser eye procedure using Femto-LASIK. After numbing your eyes with eye drops, a flap is created in the top layer of the cornea and folded back. The laser is then used to correct the visual impairment underneath. In the PRESBYOND procedure, the dominant eye is corrected for distance vision, while the other is adjusted for near vision. The flap is then folded back into place, serving as a natural protective lens for the eye. The appointment takes about an hour.

  • After the first few hours

    Possible symptoms

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience increased light sensitivity, red eyes, and a foreign body sensation during the first few hours. Other symptoms may include cloudy vision, watery, dry, burning, or swollen eyes, as well as temporarily fluctuating vision. It is recommended to wear sunglasses as protection against glare and foreign particles.*

  • After 24 hours

    First follow-up

The first follow-up check takes place the next day. During this visit, your new vision without corrective lenses will be checked for the first time. Typically, a confirmation for the road traffic office can also be issued at this point. In general, you can resume your daily activities as usual.

  • After 7 days

    Second Follow-up

Your second follow-up check takes place after one week. With PRESBYOND, you will often have already achieved full vision and no longer experience significant side effects. It’s important to continue following the recommended hygiene measures and apply the eye drops according to the prescribed schedule.

  • After 14 days

    Back to everyday life

Sports, swimming, and sauna use are allowed again, as well as wearing makeup and creams around the eye area. If you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach out to the Medical Team or our Customer Care Team.

  • After 2 months

    Final Follow-up

A final follow-up check will take place after approximately two months to assess your vision and ensure the optimal long-term healing process of the eye.

*Please note that an individual’s sensitivity to pain and the perception of symptoms can vary from one person to another. Therefore, the process may be slightly different for you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about PRESBYOND

Here you’ll find the most important questions and answers about betterview and the PRESBYOND treatment method. If you need more information or have any other questions, feel free to get in touch with us.

What is PRESBYOND?

PRESBYOND is an eye laser procedure (Laser Blended Vision) by Zeiss. It combines laser eye surgery with monovision, providing a solution for improving presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). The Femto-LASIK method is used, where one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other for near vision.

What are the benefits of PRESBYOND?

PRESBYOND offers a solution for people with presbyopia. The procedure is individually tailored, has a quick recovery time, and boasts high customer satisfaction. After treatment, there is no longer a need for visual aids like contact lenses or glasses.

PRESBYOND or Refractive Lens Exchange?

PRESBYOND and refractive lens exchange are both options for correcting presbyopia. While PRESBYOND is a laser eye treatment that corrects the vision by reshaping the cornea of the eye, refractive lens exchange involves replacing the eye's natural lens with an artificial lens.

How long does PRESBYOND last?

PRESBYOND improves presbyopia and typically lasts between two and five years. However, due to changes in refractive errors, the aging process of the eyes, or additional issues like cataracts, another treatment may be required to restore vision performance in the future.

When is PRESBYOND not possible?

PRESBYOND treatment may be excluded under the following circumstances: medical contraindications, corneal diseases, eye conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma, extremely high refractive errors, or unstable vision prescriptions.

What does PRESBYOND cost?

A PRESBYOND treatment at betterview costs CHF 2,390 per eye. The treatment is affordable through individual monthly installments. PRESBYOND offers an alternative to refractive lens exchange and allows for the correction of astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, as well as improvement in presbyopia.

How long does recovery take after PRESBYOND?

The treatment is characterized by a short recovery process. However, as with any medical procedure, you may experience blurred vision, burning or dry eyes, a foreign body sensation, and increased light sensitivity during the first few hours. The Medical Team will provide you with detailed information about what to expect.

What side effects may occur?

In the first few hours, the following symptoms may occur:

  • Increased light sensitivity
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Blurred or cloudy vision
  • Red, burning, or dry eyes

What are the most common risks of laser eye surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a very safe option for the long-term correction of refractive errors. However, like any medical procedure, it does carry some risks. The most common include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Overcorrection or undercorrection

In most cases, the complications mentioned above can be resolved with a follow-up treatment.

Where is PRESBYOND offered?

PRESBYOND is currently offered by betterview only in Zurich.

What is the difference between the different treatment methods?

The treatment methods differ in their approach. Femto-LASIK, Trans-PRK, and SMILE Pro correct refractive errors on the cornea, the front layer of the eye. In lens implantation, an artificial lens is inserted into the eye, while in refractive lens exchange, the eye's natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. Both refractive lens exchange and PRESBYOND are also correction options for presbyopia (age-related farsightedness).
